Stonehenge

We all have bucket-list travel spots. You know it’s true! Those places that we keep saying, “I’m going there someday! I have to see it!” Well, on my top 5 sat Stonehenge. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to see those humungous rocks. I’ve always been obsessed with history, go ahead and call me a nerd… I’ll wear that title with pride! So, yea, Stonehenge has been a must-see since forever. As soon as we landed England this Spring, we drove over to the site. It was literally the FIRST thing we did in the UK, even before lunch and that’s saying something cuz ya’ll know I love to eat! We got there as soon as that sumbitch opened, and I was excited but nervous. It’s like meeting a celebrity you’ve always admired. You think, “Will they be as cool in real life as they are on Instagram?”  Exactly the same.

Things didn’t look good for Stonehenge at that point, to be honest, because conditions were NOT perfect. It was rainy. And not that cute little drizzle-rain, Aye no! The droplets were giant sized and it was cold as hell. Like BRRR, cut into your bones kinda cold. And all we had on were thin cardigan sweaters under our rain jackets. The actual rain was coming down in random bursts. Like one minute it was a soft, cold fog and the next it was an aguacero ( translation: downpour). Not ideal for casually strolling around ancient rocks. I mean, how am I gunna look up in wonder and not get water in my eyeballs? Even worse, on MY HAIR!?! The Marido was cranky cuz he got no sleep on the long flight, and his pants were now soaking wet. The ninos were complaining about their hands being totally frozen. Bunch of pansies, ha! It didn’t bode well for our visit, though.

Having that all said, Stonehenge was awesome. Rain and wind did not stop that place from feeling truly magical. As you walk up to the stones, you feel incredibly small and insignificant.  Those rocks are HUGE ya’ll. They demand your focused attention. And the way that they are placed in formations, it’s art. Ancient art. It really is gorgeous. We walked all the way around that path, looking at the different rocks from every vantage point… rain be damned. We Oohed and Aahhed about the beautiful English scenery. And we laughed our asses off at how friggin wet we were. I had to keep wiping the camera lens off just to get a picture. Ha!

Inside of the actual museum, there are so many cool things to see (something I wasn’t aware of before we got there).  There are reproductions of other ancient sites in the area, historical artifacts used by the people of that time, and lots and lots places to read up on the history of Stonehenge. My favorite bit of the whole museum though was the replica of a village that the Druids would have lived in; they were the people who most likely created Stonehenge.  The huts were incredible, and I don’t know, just seeing them and being able to walk into them… it brought history to life for me. Thankfully, at this point, the rain had gone back to a cold fog.

Listen, Stonehenge was 100% worth my visit. It really is impressive and awe inspiring. Even in the damn rain. Fact! Thing is, I’m actually glad that it rained on us like it did. We started our England adventure laughing our heads off, and the memory of THAT will forever be linked to Stonehenge for me. Total Win! That’s why we travel in the first place, verdad? To create fantastic memories! This one is definitely one for the books and we won’t forget it any time soon. That being said… next time I’d like a sunny day, fo sho!

Until next time y con mucho amor,

Joana
